Beijing: Virtual Flâneur

In Michel De Certeau’s essay “Walking in the City” (1984) he argues that someone who walks through the city has a better grasp on the city than an urban planner who views the city from a top down perspective. A person with “idle footsteps,” who walks through the city, can see what is really going on with it. Who does the city belong to? How is it changing? What sets a city in motion? With the use of technology, I intend to employ the concept of examining Beijing from the bottom up, to answer some of these same questions as best as I can.
